FAQ

What is cross-border healthcare?

Cross-border healthcare allows you, as an EU/EEA citizen, to seek medical care in another member country and receive reimbursement from your own government. This is regulated in EU Directive 2011/24/EU.

Can I choose a healthcare provider in another country?

Yes, you can choose between public and private healthcare providers in another EU/EEA country, as long as the care is medically necessary and normally covered by your home country’s healthcare system.

Do I need to apply for prior authorization?

In some cases, prior authorization is required to receive reimbursement, particularly for:

  • Care that involves an overnight stay.
  • Expensive or highly specialized treatments.
Without prior authorization, you risk being denied reimbursement even if the care is medically necessary. Contact your local authority to confirm the requirements for your situation.

What is the difference between prior authorization and pre-assessment?

  • Prior Authorization: Required for planned care such as inpatient treatment or costly procedures.
  • Pre-Assessment: Offers an estimate of potential reimbursement but is not mandatory.

Who receives the reimbursement with prior authorization?

To you as the patient: If you pay for the care upfront, you can apply for reimbursement afterward from your local authority.

Can prior authorization be denied?

Prior authorization cannot be denied if the care:

  • Is medically necessary.
  • Is part of the public healthcare system in your home country.
Exceptions may apply if the treatment poses a significant health risk or is provided by a healthcare provider that does not meet quality standards in the host country.

How does reimbursement work?

With prior authorization, you are guaranteed that the costs will be covered.
Without prior authorization, you may pay upfront and apply for reimbursement afterward, but there is a risk that some costs may not be covered.

What if I can't access care in time in my home country?

If waiting times in your home country are medically unacceptable, you may be eligible for prior authorization to receive care in another EU/EEA country. This is especially applicable if your health is at risk of worsening.

How do I plan cross-border treatment?

  1. Contact your local authority to learn about your rights and requirements.
  2. Decide whether you need prior authorization or wish to request a pre-assessment.
  3. Reach out to us at Aleris for advice and assistance with booking your care.

How do I find my national contact point?

If you're unsure which authority to contact in your home country, each EU member state has a national contact point to guide you.
To find the national contact point in your country, check this guide.
